The world as we know it changed in November 2022. While decades of work had been invested already in artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, and data management, November 2022 marked a turning point. OpenAI launched ChatGPT, revealing a glimpse of the true potential of large language models and generative pre-trained transformers. Although AI was not a new concept, it suddenly became very real, opening our eyes to the future and the possibilities that lie ahead.
Within two months, most board room and technology conversations shifted into AI conversations. While virtually every business wants and needs AI to fuel business transformation, the adoption of AI continues to face three main challenges. First, businesses are reluctant to share their data with third-party vendors, largely due to regulation, even though cloud service providers have incredible security controls. Second, a small percentage of software engineers have the skillset to create solutions that enable AI experiences to be built using this private data end to end. And third, enterprise companies struggle with fragmented data management platforms and products, making it difficult to make technology decisions without limiting flexibility in other areas of their data architecture. This complexity also makes it challenging for enterprises to identify and prepare appropriate data assets for AI-powered experiences.
